Go Back West Catholic and Catholic Central Present: The Comedy of Errors

Egeon, a merchant from Syracuse, is condemned to death in Ephesus for
violating the ban on travel between the two rival cities. He explains that he came to
Syracuse in search of his wife and one of his twin sons, who were separated from him
twenty five ears ago during a shipwreck. The other twin, who grew up with Egeon, is also
traveling the world in search of his missing family members. Both sets of twins are
identical, and each has a twin servant named Dromio.

Antipholus of Syracuse (Egeon’s son) and his servant, Dromio of Syracuse, arrive
in Ephesus. They, however, are taken by the citizenry of Ephesus to be in the home of
their twin brothers: Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant, Dromio of Ephesus .
Mistaken identities ensue as Antipholus of Syracuse is mistaken for his twin
brother by Adriana (Antipholus of Ephesus’ wife). Meanwhile, Antipholus of Syracuse
falls in love with Luciana, Adriana’s sister, who is appalled by the behavior of the
Antipholus whom she believes is her brother-in-law.

Confusion escalates when a gold chain ordered by Antipholus of Ephesus is
mistakenly given to Antipholus of Syracuse. It takes the rest of the play to finally get
people connected correctly, but Shakespeare makes sure each character goes home with
their partner.
